A meteor shower occurs when Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet or asteroid. Particles enter the atmosphere at 11-72 km/s, burning up and creating bright streaks of light. Major showers like the Perseids and Geminids can produce 60-150 meteors per hour under dark skies. Best viewed after midnight when the radiant is highest.
